Traffic signs, flipswitches and tape cassettes. By themselves, they are mundane household objects, but in the installations of Sjimmie Veenhuis (1984) they function as building blocks which are endowed with a completely new meaning. With geometrical precision, Veenhuis creates abstract compositions with the existing objects, in which ‘tape’ and ‘switch’ have undergone an essential transformation of their efficacy and are elevated above their standing. With Aspect Ratio, Sjimmie Veenhuis presents his work to a larger audience, with regards to the subject matter at its essence. This publication offers the very first retrospect of his oeuvre to date, and primarily functions as an exploration of its continuation. As such, his artistic practice so far will be completely portrayed, and connected to the motives behind both substance and meaning.
