Kosters in het Nederland van nu
For over a year, photographer Edith Gerritsma and journalist Andrea Hijmans have studied the work of sextons in the Netherlands of today. They followed five of them in their daily activities - some working in the city, others in the countryside, and from different denominations. They attended services and weddings, funerals and baptisms, attended union meetings, and attended training and trade shows. In the past, the sexton was a common sight in many villages and towns. Even today, many sextons still play an important role in their community. What does a sexton actually do? And how many sextons are there? How has their profession changed in recent years? Is the sextonship in danger of disappearing? These and other questions are central in their photo book.
